Pain Management

Pain ManagementPain is the most common reason people seek professional help and most commonly this is for back pain, neck pain and headaches.

Acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to injury and the need to take care of yourself. Chronic pain is different. Pain signals keep firing for weeks, months, even years. There may have been an initial mishap, a sprained back or serious infection, but some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage. Common ongoing pain syndromes include headache, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself) or psychogenic pain (pain not due to past disease or injury or any visible sign of damage inside or outside the nervous system).

Although analgesics have their place in acute situations, chronic pain from musculoskeletal sources best responds to the drugless approach. Depending on the pain generators treatment options can include:

Pain ManagementTherapeutic massage, relaxation therapies and behaviour modification can also be used within a treatment program.  Since chronic pain depletes the chemical resources of the body, supplement and herbal support might be indicated.

Probably the most important factor in managing chronic pain is understanding the difference between “hurt and harm”. The more you know about your pain, the more in control you are.

Used at the right time and for the right person, these choices can provide temporary or permanent relief from pain. Chronic pain changes the way we function and eventually the way we think. Pain becomes the master of our choices. At Downtown Integrative Health Group, we believe Life Shouldn’t Hurt.
